William Shakespeare

AUGUST 2012

This month the HD Crew (Leonard Cornelius, Eley May, Serge Zugaryev, Dalena and I) had the pleasure of performing our lively Bollywood show 'Be Enchanted' for the family and guests of a very sweet little girl at her first birthday celebration. The costuming and exuberant routine makes this show a delight for our cast to perform and always creates a joyful and fun experience for the audience.

The job of a dancer is to communicate the feeling, story or intention of your movement and take the audience on a journey with you.

The art of choreographing a production starts with images, thoughts and ideas that inspire a story. Once a story has been hatched then music is sourced to create the full picture. Sometimes the music comes first, but personally I prefer to create the meaning through the story itself and let the music flow from there.

I take great inspiration from the works of William Shakespeare. His stories are timeless and the core ideas in his work are as relevant today as they were 400 years ago. I try to tap into the fundamental human emotions that he expresses and create works with the intensity of that emotion.

As performers, the unpredictable situations that face us at each different venue mean that we have to be ready and able to meet any challenge. We continue to develop our range of coping skills so that we can adapt to any number variables. These variables can range from adjusting to a very small floor spaces after rehearsing in a large scale studio, to the challenge of the unpredictable audience, which can be the very young to the not-so-young, a corporate group, a party, wedding or anything in between! The secret to a successful performance is knowing your content inside out so that you can adjust it to work in any situation.

Another great challenge of performing is gauging the effect that you have on your audience. After constructing and perfecting a show, the music, choreography, costumes, audio-visual equipment and props can affect different people in different ways. I am fascinated by peoples' reactions to what they see and hear and I always strive to understand what stirs their passion so that I can incorporate that into our shows. We as entertainers have an important role in society. Through the ages the art of performing has been an integral part of any civilization. It fulfills a need for people not just to be entertained, but to be taken out of the mundane and the everyday, on a journey of freedom and adventure.

We as entertainers have an important role in society. Through the ages the art of performing has been an integral part of any civilization. It fulfills a need for people not just to be entertained, but to be taken out of the mundane and the everyday, on a journey of freedom and adventure. We give people the opportunity to explore heightened emotions of love, lust, sadness and joy and to open them to dream just a little.

Everyone is different and that is what makes life interesting.

Captivate. Dance. Ignite.
